I have been a Durango resident for 10 years. I grew up in Central Florida and drove through Durango one summer and fell in love with this place. If you have ever been here, you will know why. I had never even heard of Durango, CO. I had been skiing and snowboarding on the front range mountains on various vacations. Although those mountains are beautiful, I truly felt a connection to Durango. I think the San Juan Mountains are more tangible and inviting.
Durango is also so close to New Mexico, so I have the best of both worlds. One weekend I can be enjoying the steep slopes in Telluride and the next I can be shopping the art galleries in Santa Fe. Since Durango boasts over 300 sunny skies a year, our winters are not dark and gloomy. Instead, I can enjoy sunny days on the slopes or cross country skiing with my family. Biking is my choice for summer, with the option of road biking or mountain biking. I personally chose a cross cycle bike to do both. My family and I find ourselves getting up in the morning and trying to get outside as soon as possible. I have not tried climbing or kayaking, but those are definitely future options.
People may say that the home prices are more expensive then other parts of the country, but when you evaluate the quality of living versus the cost of living, it is much, much more. People smile at you when you pass them on the street. The schools are terrific, the crime is non existent and the views are your church.
In short, Durango is a lifestyle investment. That's what I promote in my real estate career.
